Where is RAM made? Is RAM American? At Don Franklin Monticello Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, we’ll clear up the confusion surrounding RAM trucks and their heritage. Whether you’re shopping for tough work trucks or rugged off‑road machines, understanding the brand is essential.
Currently, the global company Stellantis owns the RAM brand. Before becoming a stand-alone brand in 2010, the RAM brand was first a model line within Dodge. Although RAM is an American brand, not all of its vehicles are made in the United States. While the heavy-duty RAM trucks are manufactured at the Saltillo Truck Assembly Plant in Mexico, some trucks, such as the popular RAM 1500, are manufactured in Sterling Heights, Michigan.
Chrysler bought Dodge in 1981 and kept their most popular models, including the RAM pickup trucks. From 1981 to 2009, their pickup trucks were called “Dodge RAM.” Then, they decided to restructure the brand and split Dodge and RAM into two separate vehicle lineups.
In 2009, the parent company of Dodge and Chrysler decided to make RAM a stand-alone name for its pickup trucks. That’s why, if you own a Dodge pickup truck made before 2009, it’s called a Dodge RAM. Post-2009 pickups are RAM trucks. They’re still the same company; the only difference is that Dodge cars, SUVs, and minivans are under Dodge branding, and their pickups are under RAM.
Dodge RAM split into separate entities so that Dodge could focus more on building new vehicles that could compete with the likes of the Jeep Wrangler and Chevy Corvette. The split allowed Dodge to create industry standouts like the Dodge Challenger and Charger muscle cars, the Durango SUV, and more Number One fan favorites.
Although RAM is not Dodge, the brand exhibits the same exquisite craftsmanship you came to expect from a Dodge RAM vehicle. Here are just a few of the RAM models Stop drivers will find on our showroom floor:

By keeping major manufacturing steps, such as final assembly, frame welding, and paint, in-house at U.S. factories, RAM secures its status as an American-made truck.
